Periodicals Backfile Area

The Periodicals Backfile collection is currently being re-shelved by the renovation crew. It has become apparent that the collection has grown enough in the past couple of years to necessitate weeding in order to accomodate future growth. We also noticed some bug-damaged materials. Therefore, to address both of these concerns, some journal issues will not be immediately reshelved.

A binder will be provided soon at the ref desk indicating which materials are still in boxes. These include those damaged materials or issues that are duplicated by online access. Next summer, a project is planned to weed out duplicated, damaged, or old issues that are no longer needed.

Scientific Calculator

I've had a couple of reference requests to borrow a scientific calculator. Of course we don't have calculators at the ref desk, but did you know that every Windows computer has one?

Once the calculator comes up, click on View, then Scientific. Voila! Use the number pad keys to calculate, or the mouse to click on the number buttons.

The calculator stays "on" until you close the window. Students (and I!) love it because you can copy and paste the results directly into other applications!

Old Catalog Requests

Requests for course descriptions from old course catalogs - these are provided by the Registrar's Office, although fees may apply. The library cannot accommodate such requests because we don't have the staff to search/xerox/fax/scan the material.

Spring 2009 Orientation

According to an email from Myhraliza Aala:

Spring 2009 Student Orientation will be Wednesday, January 7, 2009 through Friday, January 9, 2009.

In an effort to better educate students regarding placement exams, General Advising will begin on Tuesday, January 6, 2009 at 9:00 am, followed by the Writing Placement Exam that will begin at 10:00 am and will end at 12:00 pm. General Advising will also be ongoing throughout orientation.

Orientation sign-up will tentatively begin the week of October 20, 2008, pending that the new online payment system is ready to go. Please visit the orientation website for updates and additional information.

Banned Books Display

"We will be celebrating Banned Book Week by having volunteers read banned and challenged books in our special Banned Book Reading Room at Twin Hickory Library. We have a comfy reading chair, ottoman, reading lamp and a nice selection of banned and challenged books for our readers."
