UHHL and z:drives

I just called ACS and found out that UHHL accounts and z:drives MIGHT be disabled THIS Friday, May 16. There's some uncertainty because apparently NS has been out. I'm posting signs and a newsbox alert just in case.

Yes, this means that to check their grades next week, students will need to get a new UHHL account. In the past, only students already registered for Summer or Fall could get a UHHL account; I don't know if this is still the case.

Don't forget that we have the yellow slips with ACS contact information if students want to comment on this issue.

Student Announcements Digest May 12-17

LIBRARIANS: Is this something you think would be helpful to post here each week? Please discuss in comments.

Friday, May 16, 2008
* Change of Major Deadline. Last day to submit Change of Major form to the Registrar's Office.

* Rehearsal for Commencement, 2:30-4:30 pm, Edith Kanaka’ole Multi-purpose Stadium. All students planning to participate in Saturday’s Commencement ceremony must attend this rehearsal.

Saturday, May 17, 2008
* Spring Commencement, 9:00 am, Edith Kanaka’ole Multi-purpose Stadium. Congratulations to all graduates!

* Residence halls close at 9:00 am. Meal plan ends with breakfast.

* Origins of Astronomy in Hawaii, 12:00-1:00 pm, Imiloa Astronomy Center. The public is invited to a free talk by Dr. Walt Steiger on the origins of astronomy in Hawaii. Knowledge of the night sky was very much a part of early Hawaiian culture. Western astronomy sporadically entered the scene but did not achieve a permanent foot-hold until 1957 with the advent of the International Geophysical Year (IGY), leading to a solar observatory on Oahu and later atop Haleakala. The incredibly clear skies above Hawaii’s mountains soon attracted some of the world’s major telescopes.

ANNOUNCEMENTS and OPPORTUNITIES
* Registration for Summer 2008 and Fall 2008 classes continues via the MyUH Portal.

* Final grades for Spring 2008 are due in the MyUH Portal by Monday, May 19. Students should check the MyUH Portal to find out their grades (paper grade reports are not mailed to students).

* Take a survey! If during the present academic year you have used the services of the Student Health Services (2nd floor Campus Center) and/or the Counseling Center (2nd floor Student Services Building), we would very much appreciate your taking a few minutes to complete a short satisfaction survey so that we can use the information to improve services to students next year. Since we are here to serve you, there is no one better to let us know how we are doing! From Carolyn Lesnett, Director of Student Health Services, and Larry Test, Director of Counseling Center.

* Points Against Hunger: Non-returning students are invited to donate their meal points to the Hawaii Island Food Bank. Please contact the Sodexo office if you are interested. At the end of the term many students have points remaining on their meal plans which do not carry over to following semesters. This is coordinated by UH Hilo Campus Center Service Learning in collaboration with Sodexo.

* Looking for a summer job or a job for next year? Some programs on campus are currently recruiting for summer jobs (such as Upward Bound) and for next year (such as the new Student Life Center and the Minority Access & Achievement Program). Visit the online student employment system for more information.

* Relay For Life 2009: Relay For Life UH Hilo is looking for chairpersons and volunteers for their 2009 steering committee. If you're interested in making a difference and having a blast all at the same time, please email Amy at amyhull@hawaii.edu or Jenni at jueno@hawaii.edu.

* Fall 2008 Semester classes begin on Monday, August 25!

Writing Center closed

A student came to the desk this morning quite upset that the Writing Center was closed, even though students may still be writing papers. Nevertheless, it is closed, per this email from Karla Hayashi (date added by me):

Aloha,

The end of semester came suddenly (at least it did for me) so I am late in informing everyone that the last day of service at the UHH Writing Center will be today (5/8/08) at 1:30. My apologies.

We'll see everyone next fall, in August.

Mahalo for your continuing support,

Karla Hayashi

End of Year books from Borders

Much Mahalo to everyone for not only trekking to Borders to pick out such great items, but for so patiently filling out the cataloging slips. The items have gone into TS for processing. Despite my original impression, there were actually remarkably few duplicates - bravo!
