Photography and Copyright

Interesting follow-up to the Free Use Photos: a call from the FBI. Also includes links to info about photography and copyright.

The Tweaking of the Thesis Policies

I'm continually adjusting our thesis policies as I get more information from the publisher on how they have changed things. The new policy is up on the Library's webpage (under Writing tools). A few major things to remember, if a student asks you:

There is no more purple booklet. The guidelines and forms are on the web at:
http://www.il.proquest.com/dissertationagree/masters_thesis_publishing_agreement.pdf
username: dissertations password: publish. I've printed out a reference copy for the desk.

FEES: There is a mandatory fee of $45.00. This gets the student one bound copy, and the Library one bound copy. There are OPTIONAL fees of $65.00 to register copyright, and $95.00 if they choose "Open Access" publishing. There are pros and cons to both these options, students really have to read the booklet, which explains both VERY well. Checks (made out to University of Hawaii) and cash are good for these fees. No credit cards. If students want additional copies, they have to ORDER and PAY FOR them themselves. Credit cards work for this.

The Library does not need a printed copy of the thesis. Students should not bring, and librarians should not accept, printed copies.

Thesis should be in PDF format. We can convert a Word Document if needed.

The most important thing to remember is that this is all different than how it was done in the past. Professors and departments may be giving students outdated information, because, really, who can keep track of this stuff? When all else fails, come get me.

GreenFILE

Another free database from EBSCO:

GreenFILE offers "well-researched information covering all aspects of human impact to the environment. Its collection of scholarly, government and general-interest titles includes content on global warming, green building, pollution, sustainable agriculture, renewable energy, recycling, and more. The database provides indexing and abstracts for approximately 295,000 records, as well as Open Access full text for more than 4,600 records."

LISTA and TRC are already on our list and I've asked Brian to add GreenFILE.

Serials Resources

I am posting the link to our 2008 Gov Docs checkin-file for use at the reference desk: http://library.uhh.hawaii.edu/intra/techservices/serials/govdreftool08.php . You will be prompted to login since the file resides on our Intranet pages. In addition to finding those documents received by the library this year, you can click on the breadcrumbs trail at the top of the page and navigate back to our Serials Intranet page for links to other related resources.

Some mainland librarians have started a flickr account called "Free Use Photos". So the next time you have a presentation, display, or handout and don't want to have to think about copyright clearance for the images, check it out.

Theses / Dissertations Logins

ProQuest has changed the guidelines for theses and dissertations and imposed a login and password system.

New Focus

Since this blog isn't being utilized, I'm going to change the focus to a Reference Desk Information Blog. Anytime you find something to share with Reference Desk folks, post it here for easy access. Posts are archived monthly and there's a search box in the upper left corner.

Neat, nifty examples follow...
